RSA NetWitness return code 1 from org.apache.hadoop.hive.ql.exec.DDLTask.Java heap space

Issue

1. Not able to run Warehouse reports on the master-node hosting the "virtual-ip/VIP".
2. Getting below errors:

2016-09-28 13:16:20,285 ERROR ql.Driver (SessionState.java:printError(419)) - FAILED: Execution Error, return code 1 from org.apache.hadoop.hive.ql.exec.mr.MapRedTask

2016-09-28 13:16:20,342 WARN  thrift.ThriftCLIService (ThriftCLIService.java:ExecuteStatement(213)) - Error fetching results: 
org.apache.hive.service.cli.HiveSQLException: Error while processing statement: FAILED: Execution Error, return code 1 from org.apache.hadoop.hive.ql.exec.mr.MapRedTask

 

Cause

Low Java heap memory size.

Resolution

On the "Warehouse Master-node", perform the below: 

1. cd /etc/gphd/hive/conf
2.  cp hive-env.sh.template hive-env.sh
3. vi hive-env.sh
4.  Do the changes by changing the heap size 
5. Cross check "ps ax | grep <pid>"
6. Look for last "-Xmx" parameter value in command line, for example "java -Xmx128m -Xmx256m -Xmx64m" is equivalent to "-Xmx64m"  only last entry matters.
7. Change the size to  "-Xmx2048m"
8. Restart Hive Server  using the command:

service hive-server2 restart
