NetWitness Platform Security Advisory: CVE-2022-3786 and CVE-2022-3602 OpenSSL Vulnerabilities

CVE Identifier

CVE-2022-3786 and CVE-2022-3602

NetWitness Severity

None

Summary

CVE-2022-3786 and CVE-2022-3602 are buffer overrun vulnerabilities in the name constraint checking function of the X.509 certificate verification in OpenSSL.

The OpenSSL versions: 3.0.0, 3.0.1, 3.0.2, 3.0.3, 3.0.4, 3.0.5, or 3.0.6. are affected by this vulnerability.

NetWitness products use OpenSSL versions that are not vulnerable. Hence, NetWitness products are not impacted.

Note: NetWitness Platform XDR 12.0 or later versions allow customers to download an OpenSSL version that they prefer.  Only the nonfips core builds for TLS 1.3 support use Openssl 3.0.1 version and are affected.

For mitigation, please refer to the following section. For further questions, contact NetWitness Customer Support.

Mitigation Steps

No mitigation steps are required for any NetWitness version where the customer is using default OpenSSL versions that came packaged with NetWitness Platform XDR.

For those cases, where a customer might have downloaded any of the OpenSSL versions: 3.0.0, 3.0.1, 3.0.2, 3.0.3, 3.0.4, 3.0.5, or 3.0.6., you may please download and install the latest OpenSSL version (3.0.7).

If you think the OpenSSL version that you installed is vulnerable, contact NetWitness Customer Support.
